Why do I think Mafuyu Sato, from the anime/manga “Given” by Natsuki Kizu, is such a good character? Months prior to the start of the story, Mafuyu’s childhood friend and boyfriend Yuki Yoshida dies, leaving him in a state of depression and loneliness. As his father was imprisoned when he was young, Mafuyu grew up with just his mother for most of his life. When they were kids, Yuki and Mafuyu used to take care of each other and developed a sense of trust. One of his friends described it as “their own little world.”
Mafuyu always carried around Yuki’s guitar, and one day he stumbles upon Ritsuka Uenoyama, a boy who plays in a band. Mafuyu desperately wants Ritsuka to teach him how. They bond over music and soon develop feelings for one another. Mafuyu joins Uenoyama’s band and becomes the vocalist.
For the most part, Mafuyu is docile and melodramatic and says it’s hard for him to express how he really feels. The only time you really see him expressing a lot of emotion was when he successfully did his first live performance.
Mafuyu is broken emotionally and I feel really bad for him. During his live performance, he dedicates the song to Yuki. I don’t know why, but that scene made me really sad. I’ve only watched the anime, but from what I’ve read, the manga goes into much more detail. This series made me cry and I’m looking forward to reading the books.
