Soma Asman Kadar - Black Butler

I’ve recently been watching the anime Black Butler, and I would like to talk about one of my favorite characters in it so far.

Soma Asman Kadar is a 17 year-old boy who is the prince of Bengal and traveled to London to find a servant of his who had disappeared. Soma is a bit selfish and vain, but is a funny and reliable character. Although he has a hard time confronting problems, Soma helps out the story’s protagonist, Ciel Phantomhive, and gets him back on his feet. Soma’s had some tough times and it’s hard to believe such a carefree person can have such an unfortunate past. Nonetheless, he enjoys his time with his attendant and friend, Agni.

I really like Soma’s design, because I think there’s something to be said about the diversity of his character. A lot of anime characters are just strictly white, and I like the fact that this series acknowledged people of different race.

Chuuya Nakahara - Bungou Stray Dogs

In my opinion, Chuuya Nakahara, from the manga (also an anime) “Bungo Stray Dogs,” is one of the best characters in the series.

Chuuya is part of the “Port Mafia,” an evil organization founded by Mori Ōgai. His character is introduced as a bad guy, but you soon realize that, unlike many other villains, he still cares about the people he works with. No matter how much he might seem to care however, he’s ruthless when he needs to be and in the end he’s still a villain.

In this series, some people are granted with abilities. When you have an ability, you are called “gifted.” Most of the members in the “Port Mafia” are gifted and the same goes with Chuuya. He possesses the skill to manipulate gravity as he pleases and when he takes off his gloves he can use his “corrupted form,” which allows him to use all the energy in his body to make strong blasts of power.

I like Chuuya because he’s a fun character to watch. I also like that, despite the character Dazai being in the “Armed Detective Agency” (the good guys of the story), Chuuya respects him and, in the end, they make a good team.

Vanitas - The Case Study of Vanitas

A great character from the manga “The Case Study Of Vanitas” is one of the main characters and the series namesake: Vanitas.

Vanitas is very energetic and ambitious and somehow always ends up looking after the spacey vampire Noé Archiviste, his comrade. Vanitas’s unique feature is a single earing he wears that appears to be in the shape of an hourglass. He claims to be a “vampire doctor” and tries his best to save vampires from being corrupted by a dark mass called Charlatan.

Vanitas is a very funny character, but he is also very scary and seems a bit crazy. He’s not necessarily a nice character, but he’s not a bad one either. I enjoy Vanitas because he seems very mysterious. It turns out his name is symbolic of death so maybe that’s why there is an uneasy feeling to his character.

I definitely recommend reading“The Case Study Of Vanitas.” It’s another very well written on-going book series by my new favorite author, Jun Mochizuki
